A new menu and word of mouth, plus community support, is encouraging the owner of Taco Fam to keep the doors open despite challenges like rising food costs.
NAPOLEON, Ohio — A local restaurant that was set to close its doors this month is getting a second chance, thanks to strong community support and some key changes.
Taco Fam, a beloved Mexican restaurant in Napoleon, has been a staple in the community since it started as a food truck in 2016. However, rising food costs have posed significant challenges for owner Elvira Guerrero.
“Hopefully, we can see food costs come down so that everything flows how it’s supposed to,” Guerrero said. “But right now, the food cost is really hurting us.”
One factor that has helped the restaurant stay afloat is the positive response to a new menu introduced last week. Guerrero said the new offerings, along with word-of-mouth referrals from customers, have given the business a much-needed boost.
“The community has really responded as far as sending people and referring people,” she said. “The new menu is doing great. So I think we’re going to give it another month. We’re going to give it another try.”
Taco Fam is known for serving authentic Mexican street food, including burritos, tacos and fajitas. Customers and employees say the restaurant is more than just a place to eat—it’s a cherished part of the community.
“Just when you walk in, it’s very clear that you’re welcome here,” said frequent customer Heather Holbrook of Napoleon. “You’re greeted by the owner, her children, sometimes her grandchildren. It’s just a wonderful place.”
Mario Davila, an employee at Taco Fam, echoed that sentiment.
“We have a lot of loyal people who come to see us every day,” he said. “We know a lot of people on a first-name basis.”
Another key factor in the restaurant’s survival is a rent reduction from its landlord, which Guerrero said has provided a crucial lifeline.
“We’re going to keep trying to keep the restaurant open,” she said. “We’re desperately trying to keep it open because this was our dream.”
With the continued support of the community and the success of its new menu, Taco Fam is hoping for a brighter future.
