Monroe County sheriff: Phone scammer claiming to be deputy, demanding bitcoin

The sheriff’s office says a scammer is claiming to be “Deputy Corey Jacobs” and demanding people make payments through bitcoin or face arrest.

MONROE COUNTY, Michigan — A scammer falsely claiming to be a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy is threatening to arrest people over the phone and demanding payment through bitcoin.

The sheriff’s office sent out a press release on Friday warning about the telephone scam, which is targeting people in the community.

According to the release, the sheriff’s office received a report on Friday that a scammer “claimed he was ‘Deputy Corey Jacobs’, then proceeded to say that he/she either has warrants for their arrest, has failed to appear for jury duty, or has missed appearing in court.”

The scam seeks to elicit a fear response that if people don’t meet the scammer’s demands, they’ll be arrested, the sheriff’s office said.

However, law enforcement agencies will not call citizens to demand money or tell them they face arrest, Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

He advised Monroe County residents to keep some things in mind when receiving suspicious phone calls:

  • Take time to stop and think. Scammers typically sound urgent to pressure you.
  • Call someone you trust or the police for an opinion about the call.
  • Do not send any money, gift cards or wire transfer payments. Government entities do not require, or request payment over the telephone.

If any Monroe County residents receive a scam call, they are asked to contact the county’s central dispatch at 734-243-7070 and report it.
