Meet Snowcone, a puppy rescued from an animal abuse case, who needs a heart procedure

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A puppy at the Toledo Humane Society needs help. Snowcone was rescued from a massive dog abuse case in Henry County.

She needs a heart operation to live a long, healthy life.

Snowcone has been there for about a month and is already stealing hearts, while she’s working through a heart condition herself.

“She’s going to be a great, great dog for somebody someday,” Anna Brown, Director of Medical Services at the Toledo Humane Society, said.

Snowcone is going on four months old and is a Doberman puppy.

Her story began as a rough one. She was one of the 80 dogs seized from Marty Eis’ Henry County home.

Officers with the Henry County Sheriff’s office said Eis’ whole house was a makeshift kennel with stacked wire dog crates.

In a previous press release, officers noted the floor was covered in soiled wood chips, causing the home to smell like feces and urine.

Toledo Humane Society took on more than a dozen of the rescue puppies.

“She came in as a litter, there was 16 puppies altogether of a couple different age groups,” Brown said.

During the routine spay and neuter surgeries, Snowcone was identified as having additional health concerns.

“She has a heart defect, called Pulmonic stenosis, so it’s a narrowing of that valve area, pumping blood around through her circulatory system,” Brown said.

But there’s some positive news about Snowcone’s heart failure.

“She does have the good kind, the type that usually does very well with medical intervention called a balloon valvuloplasty,” Brown added.

That’s when doctors use a minimally invasive procedure to widen the part of the heart that’s too small.

And Northwest Ohioans can help.

“Her procedure alone is $7,000, the ultrasound she had on her heart is almost $1,000,” Brown said. “Just medical costs have gone up so much in the last few years.”

Without the procedure, Snowcone will not make it past 1-years-old.

The Humane Society is accepting donations for Snowcone and other animals at Toledohumane.org.

“We’re just hoping that to help her this last little bit of her journey before she goes on to her permanent home,” Brown said.

So far, the shelter has raised over $5,300, a few thousand short of their goal.

Snowcone’s procedure is scheduled for July 30 and they’re hoping to put her up for adoption about four weeks later.
