Man tased after allegedly biting, spitting on police officer

Police said they sought to arrest the suspect after he allegedly matched the description of a suspect wanted in an assault investigation.

TOLEDO, Ohio — UPDATE: Jamil Fitts was indicted on Jan. 15. During a Feb. 5 arraignment, he was found incompetent to stand trial and is seeking treatment, according to court records. His bond has been revoked.

The original story is below:

A man is in custody after allegedly spitting on and biting a Toledo police officer during an arrest in downtown Toledo Wednesday morning.

According to a Toledo police report and multiple court documents, officers were attempting to arrest 30-year-old Jamil Fitts at the intersection of Jackson and Huron streets around 11:22 a.m.; officers claimed Fitts matched the description of a suspect wanted in two assault investigations in the area.

Police said they attempted to arrest Fitts, but Fitts allegedly bit an officer in the forearm and then spit at the officer. Fitts also allegedly swung a fist at the officer.

Police said they deployed a Taser against Fitts, and he “complied enough to be taken into custody,” the report read.

Police placed a spit hood on Fitts and took him to a local hospital.

According to Toledo Municipal Court records, Fitts was charged with obstructing official business and resisting arrest, both second-degree misdemeanors. He was also charged with fourth-degree felony assault on a police officer.

Fitts was later incarcerated at the Lucas County Jail. He was arraigned Thursday morning at the Toledo Municipal Court, where a judge set his bond at $25,000.
