TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A man accused of trying to shoot and kill someone inside a Toledo restaurant full of patrons pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Matthew Exton is facing charges of attempted murder and three counts of assault for the incident at Sabria earlier this month. He entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea on Wednesday and the courts ordered a competency evaluation for him. The judge set a nearly $1.5 million bond for him across the charges.
Police say Exton entered the restaurant and tried to shoot someone, but the gun didn’t go off because the safety was still on. As he tried to manipulate the safety, patrons tackled him to the ground. Watch footage showing the moment the waiter tackled Exton in the video on this story.
Exton is due back in court on May 21, records show.
