TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Christmas markets have been a part of the European culture for centuries. But you don’t have to travel overseas to enjoy one. Gideon Owen is hosting its annual holiday market. It’s like a scene right out of a movie. Glass houses that dot the landscape are full of all kinds of treasures.
Quintin Smith and his wife, Donna, are the owners of the Gideon Owen Wine Company in Catawba Island. They love sharing the space they’ve created with everyone in every season.
“I think it’s the best little holiday market in the world,” Quinton said. “The twinkle of the lights makes it like a scene right out of a Hallmark Christmas card is what people keep telling us. It’s beautiful in the day and it’s beautiful in the evening.”
What started with a couple weekends has grown.
“This is our third annual holiday market,” Lorraine Karl, director of events at Gideon Owen said. “This year it runs four consecutive weekends. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”
Thousands of people will visit this year, and the European-inspired market was created with everyone in mind. You can shop with friends, family or by yourself and there’s plenty to choose from. Everything from jewelry and clothing to all kinds of handmade creations along with food and of course wine.
“We have vendors from the Akron-Canton area, Detroit and Kelly’s Island to Columbus,” Karl said. “We add new vendors throughout, so you can come more than once and find something new.”
Chris Redfern owns one of the stores that’s part of the holiday market. He sells Great Lakes inspired gear at his shop Martha and Molly’s in Marblehead. “For those small business that depend on year-round sales, it’s a great opportunity to build sales as we head into January. It’s important when visitors stop by they understand their dollars are being invested right back into the communities they’re visiting.”
Chris loves having an opportunity to showcase his business with such a beautiful backdrop.“Not only will they enjoy a bunch of different vendors from all over northern Ohio, but they can also enjoy Gideon Owen winery and restaurant. They can then comeback and enjoy it as we go through winter into spring.”
The holiday market is a great example of all the outdoor activities our region has to offer in the winter months. There’s no need to hibernate when the temperatures drop. The glass houses are heated, you can also venture inside Gideon Owen to warm up. And if you visit on a cold day, there are lots of places outside to help keep you warm. Quintin-“We’ve got plenty of wood burning fireplaces everywhere. Come enjoy the fresh air, it’s wonderful.”
In addition to the shopping, there are all kinds of fun activities for adults and children. The kids can go an an elf hunt or write a letter to Santa. There’s a cookie baking class, movie nights and live entertainment. The holiday market runs December 13-15th and December 20-22nd.
