Lucas County deputy faces charges after alleged hit-and-run incident

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Lucas County Sheriff’s deputy is facing charges in Sylvania Municipal Court after allegedly hitting a car and failing to stop, and the victim is now speaking out about the incident.

Deputy Mesha Brown is accused of sideswiping a 46-year-old woman’s car on Sept. 30 on Garden Road, on the overpass near I-475. The victim, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was stunned to learn the driver of the black Jeep involved in the crash was a sheriff’s deputy.

The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office released body camera video showing a deputy responding to the woman’s report of a hit-and-run. The faces in the video are blurred.

The victim said she is fighting with Brown’s insurance company to prove that Brown sideswiped her car.

“Insurance is denying, stating they will not pay my claim. I need to go through my own insurance,” the victim said. “Then I have to come out of pocket for my deductible, and I don’t have rental insurance coverage. So, I’d have to rent a vehicle. Unfortunately, my work is on strike right now. We’ve been on strike since August. I don’t have income coming in. I can’t afford it. And I shouldn’t have to pay it.”

The victim said there is plenty of proof that Brown is at fault, pointing to the body camera footage that shows Brown wiping down her vehicle.

“When I saw the body cam footage and she’s wiping the car off and it’s like, ok well, according to your insurance, you sent a video. Well, I didn’t have an accident. I have no damage on my car, but yet here’s the proof you’re wiping the damage off of your vehicle. How does that make sense? Make it make sense,” the victim said.

When the responding sheriff deputy asked Brown what happened, she said, “You tell me. Well, somebody said your vehicle hit their vehicle so that’s all. That’s why I’m here. Somebody hit my vehicle and I’m wiping it down because they ran into me. And I’m not sure where they are.”

Brown did not get a license plate number or file a police report and was cited for the incident.

“You’re here to uphold the law and you expect everybody else too. You just drive off after you hit me. I don’t care if there is no damage on your car or not. I have damage and I think it should be fixed,” the victim said. “You’re to uphold the law and you didn’t do it. You were wrong.”

The victim said she will continue to fight the case.

“It’s not fair that you’re getting away with this. And I just have to eat the bill. No, not going to happen. I will fight it,” she said.

Brown was expected to appear in court Friday morning, but there was no update available. Brown did not return a call for comment.
