TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning Wednesday of scam calls that target family members of those that have been arrested.
The agency said the scammers are using Google Voice to claim that court dates have been missed or that there are unpaid fines, and threaten arrest unless an immediate payment is made.
They add that they are using the names of actual deputies and spoofing their caller ID so it appears as if the call is actually coming from the Sheriff’s Office when it isn’t.
“Please remember that no legitimate law enforcement entity will use Google Voice to contact you or request any type of financial or payment information,” the department said in a press release. “We want to stress that no credible law enforcement agency will demand money over the phone.”
The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office advises everyone to hang up if they receive such calls and not to share any personal or financial information over the phone.
