NAPOLEON, Ohio (WTVG) – A local school superintendent was arrested after police say she was driving a golf cart while impaired when she was involved in a crash, police reports show.
Fayette Schools Superintendent Angela Belcher was allegedly driving a golf cart with the headlights off while impaired when a truck hit the golf cart near the Napoleon Police Department, police reports said.
She repeatedly insisted that the headlights were on while talking to officers, though security footage from the police station showed they were not on, according to police reports.
The incident unfolded just before 10 p.m. on July 26. Officers working at the Napoleon Police Department reported hearing the crash near their building and went outside to check it out.
The driver of a white truck said he was driving slowly, turning left in front of Belcher, but he didn’t see her until it was too late because she didn’t have the headlights on.
A responding police officer noted Belcher had a “strong smell of an alcoholic beverage” on her. When asked, Belcher told officers she had two glasses of wine about two hours before the crash.
Police reports said she was “increasingly more closed off and defensive each time I had asked if I could run her through testing,” but eventually submitted to field sobriety testing. She denied taking a breath test.
Investigators noticed several possible cues that indicate she had been under the influence, eventually arresting her after a series of tests.
Court dockets show Belcher pleaded not guilty to the charges.
