Inactive Ohio voters may have registration canceled, but there’s time to update it

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Ohio’s top election official is reminding Ohioans to check their voter registration information as local election boards prepare to remove inactive voters from the voter rolls.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose directed local election boards this week to start identifying and removing abandoned voter registrations as part of a 2021 maintenance program to make sure the voter rolls are up to date.

Voters whose records show no voting activity for a period of six years, or no activity since before the 2020 presidential election, could have their voter registration canceled, the Secretary of State’s Office said. County election offices are also required to remove past due cancellations. Ohioans can update their voter registration at the link here.

Those identified as someone who may have their voter registration canceled will receive a notice from the Secretary of State’s office by March 5, 2025. Final cancelations for abandoned registrations is set for Sept. 23, 2025.

LaRose’s office notes that no registrations will be canceled before the May primary.

Ohioans can keep their voter registration in good standing by voting, updating or confirming their information, or by responding to mailed notices from the Secretary of State’s office.

“Maintaining accurate voter rolls is fundamental to election integrity,” Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose said in a statement. “This careful and deliberate process ensures that every eligible voter can cast their ballot while removing outdated registrations that could compromise election integrity.”
