How to get results using Engage Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – If you report a problem to the City of Toledo, you want to see results as soon as possible. Now, the I-TEAM is learning there are things you can do to increase the likelihood of that happening, and it all starts with Engage Toledo.

“If you want results, please give as much detail as possible,” Toledo’s Commissioner of Customer Service and Engagement Jenny Jaqua, who oversees Engage Toledo, said.

When citizens have a concern, they can call or go online to report it to Engage Toledo; Jaqua says when they do so, there’s specific information they should include.

“Give us a parcel number, an address, a specific location. If it’s at an intersection, is it on the north corner? The south? You know, west? Give as much detail as possible,” she said.

Parcel numbers can be found by looking up the property on Lucas County Areis.

Once a complaint is reported to Engage Toledo, the agency sends that information to the appropriate city department, which then goes out to investigate. But sometimes the investigator needs more information.

”A lot of callers don’t want to give their name or their phone number, and that could prohibit a timely follow-up, if they don’t have a person or a phone number to follow up with,” Jaqua said.

While providing that information can help, Jaqua says getting results still takes time.

“We want to manage expectations,” Jaqua said. “If you call us today and alert us of an issue today, and us being the city, there’s a good chance that issue is still going to be there tomorrow… but that doesn’t mean someone isn’t working behind the scenes to get it fixed.”

Generally speaking, Jaqua says concerns like potholes and water main breaks tend to be dealt with more quickly. Other issues, like abandoned homes, can take a lot longer because the city often has to go through an extensive legal process before it can take any action.
