How to drain a pool

It may seem like summer just started, but it’s already winding down. Here’s how to drain your pool without damaging waterways and wildlife.

TOLEDO, Ohio — With summer coming up on its final days and temperatures cooling, many may begin the process of draining pools. But pools often contain chemicals that, while they keep them sanitary for our use, can be damaging to the environment.

Here’s what the city of Toledo says on its website that you should do if you are draining your pool.

First, you should never drain a pool or spa into water systems, meaning you should not let it directly into a street, storm drain or ditch.

Let the chlorine dissipate for a few days before emptying the pool or spa. When you do empty it, gradually drain it onto a landscaped or grassy area. This way, the water will be absorbed into the ground and put back into the natural water cycle.

The city of Toledo said you should also avoid using copper-based algaecides “unless absolutely necessary.” Algae should be controlled with chlorine or other alternatives.

If you still have questions about how to drain a private pool, the city encourages you to contact its Division of Environmental Services at 419-936-3015.
