New modular homes arrived in south Toledo as part of the Historic South Initiative’s push to expand affordable housing and revitalize the Old South End.
TOLEDO, Ohio — There’s a street in south Toledo welcoming two new townhomes, and it’s all possible due to a continued effort by the Historic South Initiative.
Similar to an overnight order, they’re being delivered from out of state by truck.
“These are the first new homes we’ve seen in the Old South End in probably 20 years,” said Joe Cordella, vice president of the Historic South Initiative.
Two sections of these modular homes were delivered Tuesday, with another two coming Wednesday.
“What you’re seeing behind me are two pieces of new construction, and they’ll be put together and become a two-story townhouse by the end of this week,” Cordella said. “We keep trying to rebuild, and this is a different type of rebuilding. We continue to rehab, but this is a new way.”
An empty lot near South and Maumee avenues is no more, and now a new sight fills the gap.
“We’ve now repaired 400 homes in this neighborhood, and these two will be our 14th and 15th whole-house projects,” Cordella said. “So our long-term goal is to make affordable housing in this area, and this is one way we found to do it was to use grant funding to make affordable homes.”
In total, the two new homes will both be two stories high, have three bedrooms and provide 1,700 square feet of living space. Cordella said it’s a step in the right direction toward their goal of revitalizing the neighborhood.
“It’s about stability. It’s about having families that can live here, can really make a family here, and to do that, you need a nice house,” Cordella said. “You need a home, you need something stable.”
Cordella said the plan is to market and eventually sell the homes by the end of the year.
