General Motors Toledo Propulsion Systems scaling back electric vehicle part production, increasing non-EV transmissions

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Big changes are coming to General Motors Toledo Propulsion Systems, and what kind of parts the employees make.

“This isn’t tariff-related, it’s market demand,” said Tony Totty, the president of United Auto Workers Local 14.

Totty said right now, consumers want heavy-duty trucks and General Motors is looking to fill that need. According to an internal memo sent to employees, GM leadership announced an increase in internal combustion engine (ICE) production at the Toledo facility. Totty said these are parts largely used for heavy-duty trucks.

13 Action News reached out to GM for comment.

“General Motors will revise production plans at Toledo Propulsion to support additional capacity of ICE propulsion units in alignment with current market demand and manufacturing resiliency,” wrote a GM spokesperson.

Totty said the company is reducing production on electric vehicle parts to increase production for ICE propulsion units.

“We’re confined to be able to make only so many transmissions, which is a large number, but this will give us the capacity to meet the demand,” Totty said.

It’s a change from what General Motors was looking at back in 2022. Leaders came to the Toledo facility to announce a more than $750,000 investment to prepare for electric vehicle (EV) part production.

According to the internal memo sent out this week, the internal memo said the facility will still produce EV parts, but will remove some equipment and one production line to make space for ICE transmissions. Totty said these are parts for some of GM’s most popular products.

“The demand for EV is too soft for us to turn the switch on our operation,” Totty said.

He hopes that production for EVs can make a comeback, but said meeting the market demand is a win for employees.

According to a spokesperson from GM, the change in operation will not result in more jobs. Employees are still satisfied that this change will bring more stability to operations.
