TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Toledo man is on the run after escaping police at the hospital. He was being seen for injuries caused by being hit by a police cruiser.
When officers hit Tyrone Hutchinson with the car, he claimed he couldn’t feel his legs. But police say after they transported him to the hospital, he fled the hospital on foot and is still at large.
Body cam video shows the moments that Toledo police officers talk to Hutchinson after they say they accidentally hit him.
“Yes I need an ambulance,” Hutchinson can be heard saying in the body cam video.
“You need an ambulance for what?,” a police officer asks.
“You just ran me over,” Hutchinson responds.
“Well you didn’t get run over, you just got bumped by a car,” the officer said.
Officers said they tried to stop their car while trying to arrest Hutchinson. The vehicle allegedly slid on wet pavement and mud, hitting Hutchinson.
Every accident that involves a Toledo police officer is investigated by a supervisor, according to a spokesperson for the Toledo Police Department. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
“Is your phone still recording? Is your police thing still recording?,” Hutchinson asks police in the video.
The officer gave an ineligible response.
“I bet it ain’t,” Hutchinson said.
Police video was recording, but did not capture the moment of impact, according to a TPD spokesperson.
“Due to the rapid nature of the arrest, the officer’s body cam was not turned on until after the accident. There is not dashcam footage,” the spokesperson wrote in a statement.
Hutchinson was wanted for a prior felonious assault charge, but he was reported for two new charges related to making threats to a woman he knew and stealing her car, according to police.
Police said the victim asked for her car back. Hutchinson only agreed to meet the victim if she gave him $2,000 in cash.
Officers spotted him at Mark Street and Cherry Street near Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center.
Police found the victim’s car keys on Hutchinson and the vehicle was later returned to her.
In the body cam video, Hutchinson requests a medical transport and documentation after he was hit. Firefighters show up to assist police with the transport.
“He hit me with the car, I can’t feel my left leg, that’s where he hit me,” Hutchinson tells the firefighters.
Even though he said he couldn’t feel his leg, police say Hutchinson fled on foot. Police say he is still at large.
Anyone with information about Hutchinson is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111, and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000.
