Fatal crash on Ohio Turnpike: 1 dead, 1 injured

A semi driver died, and another driver was injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike in Sandusky County early Sunday morning.

SANDUSKY COUNTY, Ohio — One person died and another was injured in a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday on the Ohio Turnpike, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 12:19 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near milepost 77 in Woodville Township in Sandusky County.

OSHP said a car driven by a 20-year-old Sandusky man struck the back of a semi before colliding with an SUV in the middle lane. The semi and the first car then went off the left side of the road and hit the median wall. The semi caught fire.

The driver of the semi, a 69-year-old man from Sterling Heights, Michigan, died from his injuries. The 20-year-old driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver of the third vehicle, a 47-year-old man from University Heights, was not injured.

The Ohio Turnpike was closed in both directions for about an hour before the right lanes reopened.

The highway patrol was assisted at the scene by the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, multiple area fire departments, Sandusky County EMS and a towing service.

The crash remains under investigation.
