Family traditions continue as Whitehouse Christmas Tree Farm opens for another season

WHITEHOUSE, Ohio (WTVG) – Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, the focus shifts to Christmas. From decorating and making cookies, to buying gifts and picking the perfect tree.

13 Action News reporter Brenna Nye tagged along with a family at the Whitehouse Christmas Tree Farm to get the full experience.

For the Lindsay and Kurivial families, Christmas is top of mind once Thanksgiving passes and the start of the season includes finding the perfect tree.

“We started doing this once we started having children. We wanted to kind of make it a tradition and do something fun to look forward to each year, and we keep coming back for the whole experience.” said Stephanie Lindsay.

Nye tagged along on their journey to get that whole experience, and they didn’t let the cold temperatures stop them from finding the perfect fit.

“Seeing them [the kids] go run off in the area where all the trees are is just — it’s awesome.” said Bob Lindsay.

“What I want the kids to really take away from this is just being together as a family and how important that really is to be together during the Christmas season especially and just the magic and the spirit of Christmas.” said Mallory Kurivial.

After a few trips through the trees, they found and claimed the perfect ones. Then it was time for a rewarding hot chocolate and a chat with Santa.

“I just hope everyone takes away how much fun we had bonding together as a family and just creating some memories for the kids.” said Kyle Kurivial.

Although the process seems seamless, owner Duke Wheeler says it takes a lot of work to get everything ready to go. And the current drought we’re in might not seem like and issue now, but it could be down the line.

“With the drought, many trees died — maybe 1,000 trees died — seedlings died,” said Wheeler. “It will impact us 8 to 10 years down the line. And we’ll plant more trees next spring to make up for the loss, but that just delays you.”

Even though people behind the scenes are putting in extra work to make up for what was lost, that still doesn’t take away from the magic of the season.

When asked what their favorite part of the day was, the Lindsay and Kurivial kids almost all agreed that it was seeing Santa, but one said that finding the tree was the highlight of her trip.

Whitehouse Christmas Tree Farm also participates in the Trees for Troops program, which provides real Christmas trees to military families. This year, trees from The Whitehouse Christmas Tree Farm will be shipped to an Army Base in Fort Cavazos, Texas.

Whitehouse Christmas Tree Farm will be open until December 15. You can find more information here.
