Doctor sentenced to prison for setting Sylvania Township home on fire last year

Andrew Campbell, 34, was sentenced to prison on Tuesday after being convicted of aggravated arson charges for setting a home on fire in December.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A former medical fellow at the University of Toledo was sentenced to prison Tuesday after being convicted of aggravated arson charges for setting a Sylvania Township home on fire in December.

Andrew Campbell, 34, was sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to 4-6 years in prison after pleading no contest in July to three counts of aggravated arson.

As part of the plea deal, three additional counts of aggravated arson were dismissed. He must also register as a lifetime arson offender and “forfeit any interest” in a Toyota RAV4 vehicle.

Campbell was accused of setting the home that belonged to another local doctor on fire on Dec. 7, 2024.

According to the prosecutor’s office, a firefighter was injured while responding to the fire, one home sustained “significant damage” and nearby homes were at risk of the flames.

“This case highlights the very real dangers arson presents to our community,” Lucas County prosecutor Julia Bates said. “We’re grateful for the swift action of emergency responders and the thorough investigation by the Sylvania Township Police Department and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office. We hope this resolution sends a strong message about the seriousness of this offense and that regardless of occupation, we will pursue justice.”

According to the University of Toledo, Campbell was a fellow in the Hematology-Oncology program.

Campbell was placed on administrative leave without pay on Dec. 20 after the university was informed of criminal charges against him. A university spokesperson said in July that Campbell is not currently employed by the university and declined further comment.
