Delivery gig workers plead with lawmakers to remain independent contractors

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -Delivery service workers are appealing to state lawmakers to let them stay independent contractors.

Drivers who deliver for DoorDash are worried about a house bill that would reclassify them as employees.

They say the legislation would regulate the time they can spend making deliveries, taking away their ability to make extra money.

Drivers held a roundtable Thursday, where they said the bill would force them to treat a delivery gig like a “regular job.”

“DoorDash recently did a poll of our workers in the state of Michigan. 84% of them said the thing that they value most about working for DoorDash is the ability to control their own schedule, how and when they work,” said Clark Kaericher, head of government affairs for DoorDash for the central region.

The bill was on Thursday’s agenda for the House Labor Committee, but it was removed.

No word on where it will go from here.
