Dave’s Turkey Chase 5K: How to register, race details and more

The annual Dave’s Turkey Chase 5K will draw thousands to downtown Toledo on Thanksgiving, expanding with new indoor amenities at Glass City Center.

The annual Dave’s Turkey Chase 5K will bring thousands of runners and walkers to downtown Toledo on Thanksgiving morning, continuing a fast-growing holiday tradition and expanding with new indoor amenities for 2025.

Now in its 11th year downtown, the event includes a 5K run/walk, a 1-mile walk, and a free fun run for kids. Race organizers say participation continues to climb, prompting a change for this year: the start and finish will move in front of the Glass City Center. Inside, the Glass City Center will allow for access to 25,000 square feet of indoor space for packet pickup, Santa’s Village, refreshments and pre- and post-race activities.

Race Director Clint McCormick said the move reflects both the race’s growth and downtown’s evolution. The race has outgrown its previous footprint, McCormick said, noting the operations team is building its largest structure yet in the form of a 50-foot-wide start and finish line. He added the event attracts both competitive runners and families looking to kick off the holiday together. “It’s the fastest race on our calendar, but also one of the most family-friendly.”

The race offers several traditions families have come to expect, including a multi-generational photo wall and a new photo opportunity with a large inflatable turkey that has become a downtown landmark.

Plus, it all benefits Cherry Street Mission Ministries, which provides shelter, meals, clothing and workforce development programs. Shannon Noak, vice president of development, said increased need makes the support more important than ever.

“Most of our beds are full as the winter months approach,” she said. “This money goes a long way. It helps us provide programs, meals and clothing so our guests have dignity and hope.”

Organizers say proceeds from the event have approached or exceeded $2.5 million in donations to Cherry Street over the partnership’s history. Noak said the funds support guests as they “land, learn and launch” through Cherry Street’s programs.

Participants and supporters are encouraged to bring donations for the mission. The most needed items are travel sized personal hygiene items and new men’s and women’s undergarments.

Thanksgiving remains the busiest running day of the year nationwide, and McCormick said Toledo is no exception. McCormick said that registrations regularly surpass previous totals. Early registration is encouraged and the deadline to guarantee shirt size is Nov. 18.

Dave’s Turkey Chase 5K is presented by First Solar with WTOL 11 as media sponsor. The event takes place Nov. 27.
