Construction underway on Washington Branch Library

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Construction is officially underway for the new Washington Branch Library in west Toledo.

City and county leaders helped break ground on the project Thursday morning.

The building will be more modern and twice the size of the old branch, with added safety and accessibility standards.

Library leaders are also hoping it will serve as an economic catalyst for the surrounding neighborhood.

“It’s a proven fact that the library has helped bolster local economies, improve property values, so we’re so excited. That’s above and beyond the resource it’s going to be for our community,” Toledo Library executive director Jason Kucsma said. “Children are going to come here to learn to read. Parents, families will be able to connect here. This space is going to bring whole lot of life into this part of Alexis that hasn’t really seen a lot.”

The 20,000 square-foot building is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
