GIBSONBURG, Ohio (WTVG) – The people of Gibsonburg in Sandusky County gather each year to remember the tragedy of 9/11 and the bravery of the first responders present. This year, local first responders had their own call to answer to.
Speakers stood before a historic 9/11 memorial containing a real 7,000-pound piece of antenna from one of the Twin Towers.
Village leaders said it was important to have a reminder of the people who were affected that day and the way people helped one another.
Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel was the guest speaker for the 2025 ceremony.
“This weighs 7,000 pounds and to think about what it took to get this here, not just physically, but all of the steps that had to be taken by this community, this village, to make sure their citizens never forget,” Tressel said.
Just before Tressel spoke to 13 Action News, emergency sirens went off across the village and first responders rushed to answer the call.
A local school bus carrying junior high football players was involved in a crash about 10 minutes away from the event.
Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton said having so many first responders nearby increased the response in a big way.
“Had we not had the ceremony in Gibsonburg, where the sheriff’s office was there, Gibsonburg PD, Gibsonburg Fire, all of our county EMS was out there. Had we not been in Gibsonburg for that 9/11 ceremony, it probably would have been minutes before anybody would have gotten here, and minutes in a crash like this in a situation like this can seem like forever,” said Hilton.
He was proud of the team effort in getting people the help they needed. 10 people were transported to the hospital, including one football player who was flown to the hospital for a head injury. Sheriff Hilton said that the player is expected to recover, and the flight was more precautionary due to his age and the type of injury.
