Columbian High School is hard at work finalizing preparations for its season opener. Fueling that process is the goal of eliminating a memory this program has not experienced in nearly a decade.
The last time the Tornadoes ended up with a losing season was in 2017. Health, or lack thereof, certainly didn’t help head coach Judd Lutz and his group last year after dealing with multiple injuries.
“Last year didn’t go our way. Me, ending my senior season, I want wins,” middle linebacker Neven Neuman said. “Wins will keep us motivated and keep us going. We don’t want to end up with a bad taste in our mouths at any point this season. That should be everybody’s goal.”
On the bright side, many young players were forced to step in, which perhaps could serve as a blessing in disguise. That playing time now serves as a tool to ultimately pay off with production.
“It’s a good sign when you return that much experience, whether good or bad, but you have to build on it,” Lutz said. “You’re always going to have guys who have no experience still, so those guys have to elevate their play right away, too. I got a lot of hungry guys ready to make a name for themselves and ready to put a stamp on this 2025 season.”
Columbian kicks off the season with a road trip to Fremont Ross on Friday, a series that has been split over the past four years. The Tornadoes have won the last two meetings.
