TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The damage may appear minimal: a car with a broken side-view mirror and a truck with a broken side-view mirror. However, in between those mirrors was a worker with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) who barely escaped injury.
“The driver of the truck saw that there was something coming towards him and he squished himself up against the vehicle and he felt the mirror, you know, brush across his back, and then the mirror hit the mirror of his truck,” said Cheri Newton, a public information officer with ODOT District 1. “He was literally between the two vehicles, yes. How scary is that?”
Wednesday, April 9, 2025, Newton said crews were setting up a message board on the northbound side of I-75 near the Hancock-Allen County line when this crash happened. It marks the 55th incident of an ODOT vehicle getting hit this year.
“You know, these guys have to keep their heads on a swivel. They live in this risk every day and have to stay vigilant. Fortunately, he was, you know, being vigilant at that time and saw that that vehicle was not staying in their lane,” explained Newton.
Shortly after that crash, another one happened in Central Ohio. This time, ODOT said a piece of paving equipment was clipped by another vehicle. It also raises the total number of times an ODOT vehicle was hit this year to 56.
