Cleveland Metroparks Zoo announces birth of endangered Eastern black rhino

On World Rhino Day, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo announced the birth of a critically endangered Eastern black rhino calf.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is celebrating the birth of a new arrival.

An Eastern black rhino calf was born at the zoo last Saturday, according to a press release. The male calf, born to 22-year-old mother Kibibbi and 25-year-old father Forrest, is bonding with his mother and has not been put on view to the public.

The announcement comes on World Rhino Day, celebrated by zoological enthusiasts every Sept. 22.

Eastern black rhinos are considered critically endangered. There are fewer than 583 adults of the species remaining in the wild.

“Every birth is significant and is an opportunity to bring awareness to the conservation issues faced by this species,” said Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director Dr. Chris Kuhar. “It’s especially meaningful to share this calf’s arrival on World Rhino Day, a time when we celebrate rhinos worldwide and highlight the urgent need to protect them. We are excited to share this milestone with our community, whose support makes global conservation possible.”
