Blissfield receives grant to boost downtown vibrancy

The upgraded sound system will be used to ‘unify and enrich the downtown experience,’ and the art alley project will showcase a rotating student art gallery.

BLISSFIELD, Mich. — The village of Blissfield has received a Vibrancy Grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to install a new sound system and support the completion of a community art gallery alley in the heart of its historic downtown.

The grant was secured by the Blissfield Downtown Development Authority, which supports projects aimed at enhancing the town’s vibrancy and economic vitality. The upgraded sound system will be used during local festivals, holiday celebrations, public gatherings and event announcements to improve communication and create a more welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors.

In addition, the grant will help complete the Art Gallery Alley project, led by Jr. MainStreet Board Member Hailey Sills. The initiative, originally started by fellow Jr. Board Member Ellie Sayler, aims to activate an underutilized alleyway by showcasing a rotating gallery of local student art.

“Blissfield MainStreet is committed to fostering community engagement and empowering our students—the future leaders of Blissfield—to take part in shaping the public square,” said Laura Nichols, Blissfield DDA/MainStreet manager, in a press release announcing the grant. “Projects like the Art Gallery Alley and our new sound system are helping us create a more vibrant, inclusive and connected downtown for all.”

Nichols added that the funding will also support local businesses by creating a more engaging environment throughout the year.

“This grant is a fantastic opportunity to elevate the experience in downtown Blissfield,” Nichols said. “The sound system will not only enhance our events but also support our small businesses by creating a more dynamic atmosphere year-round. We’re incredibly grateful to the MEDC for recognizing our vision and supporting these community-driven efforts.”

The MEDC Vibrancy Grant program supports public space initiatives that attract people, foster community pride and stimulate local economic growth. Blissfield’s projects were selected for their potential to make a meaningful and lasting impact on downtown development.

Nine communities around Michigan were awarded a total of $130,250 in grants to support downtown enhancement and improvement projects. In addition to Blissfield, the communities receiving Main Street Vibrancy grants are Rogers City, Grand Haven, Lapeer, Old Town – Lansing, Coldwater, Three Rivers, Saline and North End – Detroit.
