One of the first teams in Ohio to compete in an OHSAA 2025 football game will be the Calvert Senecas. Since 2021, this program has embraced the unique opportunity of opening a season on Thursday. They’ve done so against Mohawk in all four of those instances and the series has turned into quite a spectacle.

The previous two meetings have ended with a combined margin of victory of three points. Calvert won last year 28-27, with a 14-12 victory in 2023. Jumpstarting any season with a win provides a huge boost and that’s what the Senecas are aiming to accomplish for the 4th consecutive year.

“I’m really excited because Mohawk is always a big game and it’s been close the last two years,” senior Logan Demoss said. “This season we just want to come out…and finish them.”

Head coach Mike Lento returns to build off what proved to be a successful inaugural campaign. In his first season with the program, he guided Calvert to seven victories and ultimately led the Senecas to its first playoff win since 2017.

That also happens to be the last time this team has won a conference championship, which is now the task for a group who is hungry to continue ascending.

“This year there’s no excuses for it. There’s a way we have to approach it with our staff and guys,” Lento said. “They’ve done a great job in that aspect, we’re changing some things up so we’ll see how that goes. Our guys are doing a really good job with the roles that they’re playing and same with our coaches. Just tightening up the screws a bit.”

Speed will be the calling card when these guys take the field as Lento tells WTOL 11 that every position is filled with guys who are eager to fly around the ball. Not only has this program already experienced production on the field, but Calvert continues to grow in numbers as well. Its roster contains 45 players this Fall, an increase from 32 last season.

The Senecas are not only battling for wins but a chance at $1 million. They were one a handful of northwest Ohio schools selected to compete in T-Mobile’s 5G Lights grant competition.
