Ashland Manor trash system broken, property owner says fix is on the way

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Trash issues are back at the Ashland Manor Apartments, nearly a year after Toledo officials discovered the building was overflowing with garbage.

Residents said the issue started about a week ago when the building’s trash compactor broke. Management has since closed off trash rooms and chutes and is asking residents to keep their trash inside their apartments.

“There’s definitely a garbage issue. You can’t even use the garbage room,” Shanale Mormon, who was visiting an Ashland Manor resident Friday, said. “You got to put your trash in the hallway; then they come by and pick it up, and it’s just garbage everywhere. It’s just a mess.”

“My people, they got garbage lined up, you know, in the kitchen, waiting till Sunday for a pickup,” one resident said.

One resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, showed the I-TEAM a pile of trash inside his apartment. He said management comes by to pick up the trash once a week, but that isn’t enough.

“Are you ending up with like a lot of trash after a week?” I-TEAM Reporter Sophie Bates asked.

“Yeah. Yeah, ‘cause we usually take it out daily,” the resident responded.

“And does that smell? Like, is that causing problems for you here?” Bates inquired.

“Yeah, roaches and we got mice running around in here like crazy,” the resident said.

The building is owned by Premier Property Management LLC; the company’s president, Robert Beale, responded in a statement.

“We understand how frustrating and inconvenient this situation is for the residents of Ashland Manor. The trash compactor has failed, and new components have been ordered. We are hopeful that the contractor can deliver and install the new components within the next 7 to 14 days.

While we recognize the inconvenience for the residents to take their trash down to the dumpsters, we are pleased to offer an additional solution. Our maintenance staff will pick up the trash from each unit on a daily basis and dispose of it. Residents should place their trash bags in the hallway by 9 a.m. each morning, and maintenance staff will collect them at 10 a.m. We will continue this service until we can get the trash system fully functioning.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we remain committed to resolving this issue as quickly as possible.”
