Anthony Wayne Local Schools warns about scams targeting students

WHITEHOUSE, Ohio (WTVG) – Anthony Wayne Local Schools is warning families about online scams that are targeting students.

The district says scammers are contacting students directly through social media, email or text message and promising employment, easy money or online fame. Once trust is established, the scammers then request personal information, ask the student to transfer money or send inappropriate content. If the demands are not met, the scammers could then turn to threats or blackmail.

According to AWLS, families are encouraged to take these steps to protect and inform their children:

  • Talk with your child about the risks of talking with unknown individuals online and to be alert for dummy or duplicate accounts that appear to be someone they know.
  • Encourage your child to never share personal information, images or financial details with strangers or unverified contacts.
  • Remind your child that legitimate offers will never ask for payment, banking information or access to personal accounts upfront, especially through social media or texting.
  • Report suspicious activity or messages to a trusted adult and block the sender.
  • Contact local police if you believe that your child is a victim of a scam or phishing attempt.

“As online deception techniques become more sophisticated, we are urging our students, staff, families and AW community members to stay vigilant and educate themselves on best practices for thwarting phishing attempts,” said AWLS in a press release.
