Another Toledo woman gets call from third-party for tow and major expenses

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – We have new developments on tow truck trouble the I-TEAM has been following for the last week. Yet another driver who got a call out of nowhere from a tow and repair company on Airport Highway.

When you get in an accident, navigating how to handle repairs can be tricky and frustrating. A Toledo woman says even after she talked to her insurance company, a third-party company insists it’s helping, but they aren’t.

Amor Williams’ 2021 Nissan Murano sustained significant damage in early February as she approached Dorr street at Upton in Toledo.

“Someone’s dog got out and it was a bull mastiff and ran in front of my car causing me to swerve and hitting the dog and my air bags actually deployed,” said Williams.

Williams then called her insurance company. With it being a weekend, it took them a bit to get back with her but her first return call was not the insurance company, it was Mwork Auto Body on Airport highway. They even mention her insurance company.

“They sent me a form to sign for a towing agreement and apparently that towing agreement came with repair, permission to repair but my insurance never gave them permission to do anything,” said Williams.

The car ended up at Mwork. That’s when an invoice was drawn up for over $6,000. That dollar amount was for work, storage fees and tow fees, all from a place that wasn’t working with her insurance company and came out of nowhere.

Williams says all that run around even increased the day for those storage fees.

The company has an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau.

“Yeah they swoop in and pretend that they offer services, but the services are not usually very good,” said Lane Montz with the Better Business Bureau.

Montz says if you did not request the specific work from that specific place, then don’t accept it and be careful what you sign.

“I think it’s a pretty safe assumption they have done their due diligence to track you down and target you and they may or not be a legitimate business. But there’s no real reason to accept an unsolicited offer for service,” Said Montz.

Williams did everything right by starting with her insurance company, it just appears Mwork stepped in. Thankfully, her insurance company stepped up to pay the fees but she doesn’t want others to have these same headaches.

“I just want people to know who this company is,” said Williams.

This is now the fourth instance we’re aware of where Mwork makes this unsolicited call and got involved with a vehicle without the permission of the insurance company. It could be a coincidence, but we want to note that all four of those instances involved female drivers.
