A local partnership for Women’s History Month

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Two local businesses are blending their expertise to give back this Women’s History Month.

Local Roots Juice Company is a spot that serves juices, superfood smoothies and other foods. It’s owned by Ashley Balester.

The shop paired with Pēkomd, a cosmetic surgery center and medical spa with a growing wellness division led by Dr. Peter Koltz. Dr. Matthew Fourman is the director of wellness and the medical director of bariatric surgery at Promedica.

The center reached out to Balester and the rest is history.

“We could really develop some nutritionally sound, healthy options for folks in our community,” Dr. Fourman said.

They have created two smoothies for the month of March.

“I loved that both of our businesses’ missions are really wanting our patients and clients and customers to feel better, we want them to feel good,” Balester said.

“The Better Whey Smoothie” is packed with 33 grams of protein and is made with ingredients like banana, raw grass-fed whey protein, organic peanut butter and monk fruit.

“Glow + Go Berry Matcha Antioxidant Smoothie” has antioxidants, vitamin C, among other health benefits. Some ingredients include dragonfruit, strawberry and collagen.

“We think we landed on a really good product,” Balester said.

The taste isn’t the only thing that’s sweet, Pēkomd is going to match proceeds from these smoothies to benefit Bethany House, a shelter in Northwest Ohio for women and children escaping domestic violence.

“We really wanted to come together for this collaboration and give back to something locally that does support women,” Balester said. “They’re amazing.”

In addition, 400 cards were passed out at the International Women’s Day Luncheon hosted by HerHub, giving the recipient half-off a Local Roots Juice Company Smoothie and a complimentary consultation and shape scale body scan at pēkomd.

Local Roots Juice Company has locations in Sylvania and Perrysburg. Pēkomd has a location in Toledo.

Both businesses added the reaction has been positive, and if all goes well, they may consider keeping both smoothies around longer.
