SANDUSKY Co., Ohio (WTVG) – Nine people were taken to the hospital, including one student who was flown to the hospital, Thursday night after a bus crash in Sandusky County.
According to officials at the scene, the bus was a Northwood Local Schools bus heading back from a junior high football game at Lakota.
Officials said the bus failed to yield at a stop sign and was hit by an SUV.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. on County Road 32 near County Road 41.
Nine people were taken to nearby hospitals. One of the nine people, a student, was flown to a hospital in Toledo for treatment.
The Sandusky County Sheriff said he believes that if first responders were not at an event in Gibsonburg, the response would not have been as fast. He believes because responders were leaving a nearby event, they saved minutes on their response time and possibly saved lives.
Northwood Local School’s posted the following statement on Facebook after the crash:
“This evening on the way back from Lakota, our JH Ranger football team was involved in a bus accident.
Unfortunately, there were some injuries, but all students are accounted for and are getting the medical assistance needed.
We would like to give a huge thanks to the swift efforts of our coaches, Sandusky County EMS, Helena EMS and Fire, and Sandusky Highway Patrol, as well as other first responders on scene. Also, a thank you goes out to our Ranger parents who assisted as well.”
