Addressed: What to Wear at Coachella

Introducing Addressed, a weekly column where we’ll, ahem, address the joys (and tribulations!) of getting dressed. We’ll look at runway and real-life trends, talk to people whose style we love, and, most importantly, answer your fashion queries. Download the Vogue app and find our Style Chat section to submit your question.

Coachella is back this weekend (and next), which means that online, people are opening their little browsers and typing “coachella outfit ideas” and waiting for inspiration to strike. Well, if there’s one thing I love to do here at Addressed, it’s guide that inspiration.

But first: a confession. I have never understood the point of dressing up to go stand outside in the sun. My idea of a go-to outfit for an outdoor event where it will be hot, I’ll be standing all day, and the bathroom situation will be questionable is, put simply, a t-shirt, a pair of jeans, and comfortable shoes that won’t give me any blisters. All that said, I do realize that dressing up for Coachella is a form of method dressing and that people looove method dressing. So, let’s begin.

Another winning Vanessa look. We approve of this 2010s via the ’90s doing the ’70s take on boho.

Although the festival began in 1999, it will forever be associated with a very specific boho-inflected style that developed in the late aughts and the 2010s, which was based on a nouveau hippie view—think gauzy separates, low-slung leather belts, lots of fringe, and gladiator sandals or cowboy boots. While I would never advocate for a head-to-toe recreation of a look from a long-gone era, now that boho is officially back, it’s really easier than ever to build upon these festival basics in a more contemporary way.

And if we’re talking boho, we are definitely looking at Chemena Kamali’s latest collections for Chloé. Kamali’s obsession with the romantic blouse is well documented, and this is the perfect piece to build an outfit around. Layer one over a colorful bikini top or lacy bra, and wear it with your favorite pair of jean shorts and you’ve got a “modern” take on one of Vanessa Hudgens’s most iconic Coachella outfits. (Pro-tip: ’60s and ’70s blouses are super easy to find second-hand, and The RealReal often has a great selection of vintage Chloé blouses for not too much money!) A barely-there ruffled slip dress can also work, but I would argue that layering it over a pair of jorts—or bloomers if you really want to go for it!—is what would ground the whole look and make it practical for festival activities.

You could also invert the fancy-on-top, basic-on-bottom order, and pair a basic cotton tank or t-shirt with a groovy pair of pants. After Chloé’s spring 2025 show, I wrote an article about breezy pantaloons, and now they suddenly feel exactly right. But I admit I’m also deeply attracted to another look from Hudgens’ oeuvre—the floral low-slung pants and a matchy-but-not graphic print tank. It feels like a bolder take on the trend.

There is a cooler, dare-I-even-say chic way to wear your basic t-shirt and jorts, which comes courtesy of Zoë Kravitz (of course). A great pair of jorts and a boldly colored t-shirt —fully tucked in: it’s so simple! The shape on the shorts is crucial (how good are the pockets hanging out at the bottom of the hems here?), but I think this same approach of “being put together in super casual clothes” would work no matter the fit—from ultra-short to nu-metal bermudas.

The shoes I leave up to you, because your choice will depend on your openness to getting your feet covered in sand, dust, and mud, and/or stomped on in “the pit.” (Are there even pits at Coachella?) As for accessories, that’s where it’s all about fun: wear the big hat, the totally retro sunglasses, a hippie belt over your slip dress, and pile on the necklaces and bracelets. Honestly, throw that flower crown on! The world is too crazy right now to say no to a bit of beauty.
