Oscar nominee June Squibb, Tony winners Danny Burstein and Cynthia Nixon and Christopher Lowell have been set as the cast for Second Stage Theater’s Marjorie Prime, the Broadway production that’s aiming for a winter start at the Helen Hayes Theater.
Squibb, who is 95 and made her Broadway debut in 1959 opposite Ethel Merman in the original production of Gypsy, returns to the stage for the first time since 2018’s Waitress for the lead role in Jordan Harrison’s play, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2015.
Anne Kaufman will direct Marjorie Prime, which begins previews November 20 and opens December 8.
Marjorie Prime, Second Stage says, is “a rumination on aging and artificial intelligence, memory and mortality, love and legacy, and examines the blurred line between a life lived and a life remembered.” It was adapted into a 2017 movie adapted and directed by Michael Almereyda and starring Lois Smith, Jon Hamm, Geena Davis and Tim Robbins.
The production will be the play’s first on Broadway, after it debuted in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum in 2014 with Smith playing Marjorie. It opened Off Broadway in New York in 2015 at Playwrights Horizons with Smith starring and Kaufman directing.
Squibb most recently starred in Scarlett Johansson’s directing debut Eleanor the Great, which premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Burstein, a Tony winner for 2020’s Moulin Rouge! The Musical, was Tony nommed this year for the latest revival of Gyspy starring Audra McDonald. Nixon, a two-time Tony winner (for Rabbit Hole and The Little Foxes), just wrapped up HBO Max’s And Just Like That.
Lowell returns to Broadway after making his debut last season in Second Stage’s production of Leslye Headland’s Cult of Love.
The new Marjorie Prime creative team features scenic design by Lee Jellinek, costume design by Márion Talán de la Rosa, lighting design by Ben Stanton and sound design and original music by Daniel Kluger. Casting is by Daniel Swee.
