Ohio State Falls to Coastal Carolina in Extra Innings



COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (1-4) fell to Coastal Carolina (5-2), 10-8, in 11 innings on Saturday in the team’s second game of the Jax College Baseball Classic.  
 
Game Recap

  • The Buckeyes struck first, getting on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Trey Lipsey walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A triple into left center field from Mason Eckelman sent Lipsey in to score and gave the Buckeyes the lead, 1-0. Nick Giamarusti reached base on a fielder’s choice and stole second. He turned on the jets and scored on a wild pitch to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead. Will Carpenter and Reggie Bussey drew back-to-back walks. Matthew Graveline stepped up to the plate next and he sent one 402 feet out of the park to drive in three runs and give the Buckeyes a 5-0 advantage over the Chanticleers.
  • Coastal Carolina got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the Buckeye lead to four, 5-1, after scoring on an Ohio State error.
  • The Chanticleers added another run in the top of the fifth off an RBI double to pull within three runs of Ohio State, 5-2.
  • Starter Chase Herrell had two strikeouts in four of his six innings pitched. Sahil Patel took over in the seventh inning. The Chanticleers got one across on a passed ball, one on an RBI single and then hit a three-run home run to take their first lead of the game, 7-5.
  • An RBI single from Coastal Carolina in the top of the eighth inning put the Chanticleers ahead by three, 8-5.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Giamarusti led off with a single to center field, followed by back-to-back infield singles from Carpenter and Bussey to load the bases. With one out on the board, Tyler Pettorini doubled down the right field line, clearing the bases to tie the score, 8-8, and ultimately send the game to extra innings.
  • The Chanticleers went down in order in the top of the 10th after an impressive diving catch from Lipsey in right field and two strikeouts from Douglas Bauer.
  • Eckelman drew a walk with two outs on the board in the bottom of the the 10th inning, but he was stranded on base.
  • In the top of the 11th, the Chanticleers had two RBI singles to reclaim the lead, 10-8.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the 11th, Graveline reached base on an error, but the Chanticleers got the final out and came away with the 10-8 extra-inning victory.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

  • Herrell was dealing for the Buckeyes in a 6.0-inning no-decision. He struck out a career-high nine batters and gave up just one earned run on three hits.
  • Pettorini led the Buckeyes with two hits.
  • Pettorini and Graveline each batted in a team-best three runs.
  • Eckelman’s triple was the first of his career.
  • Bauer struck out a career-high four in 3.2 innings pitched.
  • Hayden Blosser (0-1) took the loss. He tossed 0.2 innings and gave up one hit.
