Fleming Reaches 1,000-Point Mark as Falcons Top NIU, 74-60

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Lexi Fleming scored her 1,000th career point on Saturday night (Jan. 18) as the Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team picked up a 74-60 win over Northern Illinois University inside the Stroh Center.

Fleming, in her fifth year with the Falcons (9-8, 3-3 Mid-American Conference), tied for team honors with 15 points. Sophomore Paige Kohler also had 15 points, while redshirt sophomore Jasmine Fearne scored 11 points to tie her career high.

Fearne paced a BGSU bench brigade that scored 28 points. The Falcons’ plus-23 margin in bench scoring (28-5) was the team’s largest of the season.

Chelby Koker scored 16 points for the Huskies (7-10, 1-5 MAC), with Lexi Carlsen and Alecia Doyle adding 15 apiece.

BGSU built a 15-point halftime lead, scoring the last five points of the second quarter to take a 39-24 advantage into the locker room. But, the Huskies opened the third period with 10 consecutive points, and eventually got within a single point when Brooke Stonebraker’s layup cut the BG lead to 42-41 midway through the quarter.

Kohler’s layup put BG up by three, and after another Stonebraker bucket, Kohler answered with a three-point shot before senior Amy Velasco’s jumper made it a six-point game. A Fearne triple in the final minute of the period gave the Falcons a 52-45 lead after 30 minutes.

After NIU shot 56.3 percent from the field in the third quarter, the Falcons shot 60% (9-of-15) in the fourth. Hoops by Johnea Donahue and Kohler began the final-period scoring to put the home team up by 12, and after the Huskies scored the next five points, an Erika Porter layup was followed by a Fearne three-pointer to give the Orange and Brown a 62-50 advantage with just over six minutes to go.

The Huskies crept within eight points on several occasions, but Kohler triples on back-to-back BG possessions returned the margin to 12 with just over a minute to go.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT

Lexi Fleming, as mentioned, surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career on Saturday night. She entered the game with 999 points, and exceeded the millennium mark with a layup just 2:33 into the contest.

• Fleming became the 32nd player in BGSU history to score 1,000 points, and she is tied for the ninth-fastest player to do so, achieving the milestone in her 82nd career game.

FIRST QUARTER

• The teams got off to a slow start, scoring a combined 10 points in the first five-plus minutes. Lexi Fleming hit the game’s first field goal with just over two-and-a-half minutes gone, cutting along the baseline, taking a pass from Paige Kohler and hitting a layup that gave her 1,001 career points and her team a 3-0 lead.

• Chelby Koker knocked down a long-range shot for the Huskies, but BG retook the lead when Kohler grabbed a defensive rebound and fired a long pass to Taya Ellis for a layup. After another Koker basket, Fleming found Jasmine Fearne for a three-point make at the 4:17 mark of the quarter, and moments later, a three-point play by Ellis gave the Falcons the lead for good.

• Fleming stole the ball and threw the ball ahead to Johnea Donahue for a layup and a 13-8 lead, and Fleming would close the first-quarter scoring with a triple that made it a 16-10 game.

SECOND QUARTER

• After NIU cut the BG lead in half on an Alecia Doyle three-pointer, Amy Velasco’s pass led to a triple from Fleming and a 19-13 advantage. Then, Kendal Moxey scored inside, and after a Huskie free throw, Velasco drove and hit a layup for a 23-14 lead.

• The visitors got within five points before Velasco grabbed an NIU miss and whipped a pass ahead to Fleming for a run-out. Then, the duo teamed up again, as Fleming took a Velasco handoff and hit a three-point shot for a 28-18 BGSU lead.

• The teams traded hoops, with Laila Harrison getting a jumper to go, and after two free throws each from Velasco and Fleming, the Falcons had a 34-20 advantage. Lexi Carlson countered with a corner three as part of a four-point play, but Kohler made a driving layup, and three Donahue free throws gave BGSU a 39-24 halftime lead.

• Donahue had three steals in the final minute of the second quarter alone.

THIRD QUARTER

• The Huskies began the second half on a 17-3 run to get within a single point. NIU scored the first 10 points of the quarter, capped by a Koker putback that prompted a Falcon timeout with 7:03 left in the period.

Erika Porter’s bounce pass found Velasco for a pull-up jumper that stopped that run, and Velasco was fouled on the play, making the free throw for a 42-34 lead. But, Koker kicked the ball out to Carlsen for a three-pointer, then grabbed a BG miss and took the ball all the way downcourt for a layup. Moments later, Brooke Stonebraker got the visitors within a single point with a reverse layup.

• Kohler took a Porter handoff and made a layup, and after another Stonebraker bucket, Kohler knocked down a three-point try. Then, Velasco’s floater gave the Falcons a 49-43 lead, and after a Laura Nickel layup, a Fearne triple and a Donahue free throw made it a 53-45 game.

FOURTH QUARTER

• Kohler grabbed a defensive rebound and fired a long pass to Donahue for a layup to begin the final quarter, and Kohler then hit a jumper to give the Falcons a 13-2 run and a 57-45 lead with 8:33 to go.

• Koker’s three-point play began a quick 5-0 run for the visitors, but a Fleming steal lead to Porter’s contested layup, and Fearne’s three-pointer with six minutes left in the game gave the Falcons a 62-50 advantage.

• An array of post moves by Porter led to a bucket and a 13-point lead with 4:40 on the clock, but the Huskies scored the next five points, with Doyle’s trey cutting the BG lead to 64-56.

• But, after a BG miss, Fearne stole a Koker pass near midcourt and went in all alone for a layup and a 10-point lead with 3:08 remaining. NIU got a pair of Carlsen free throws just under a minute later, but efficient ball movement by the Falcons led to back-to-back Kohler three-pointers that gave the Falcons a 12-point margin with 1:20 remaining.

• First, Fearne took a pass in the paint and fired the ball to Kohler for a left-wing three-pointer. Then, after Nickel’s layup, Fleming’s pass found Kohler on the right wing for another long-range make. Velasco drove and dished to Porter for a layup late in the shot clock, capping the game’s scoring with 33 seconds left.
