TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – What goes up must come down, is the warning from Northwest Ohio law enforcement leaders as folks may think about firing guns in the air.
That gunfire could result in serious unintended consequences that could land someone behind bars.
It’s a clear message from Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn.
“Do not fire your guns aimlessly in the air,” Wasylyshyn said. “That bullet is going to come down somewhere and we’ve had situations where it’s gone into people’s homes, it’s actually struck people very, very dangerous not a smart thing to do.”
According to the National Institutes of Health, firing guns into the air during celebrations is a tradition that poses significant risks to public safety.
“That bullet is going to hit something, now you may get lucky and it land in someone’s lawn or whatever but it could land break a windshield, it could go into someone’s home and worse yet hit and kill someone,” Wasylyshyn said.
The falling bullets can attain high velocities during their descent and have the potential to cause serious injury or death upon impact.
“I think it all comes down to common sense and being responsible for what you do,” Wasylyshyn said.
The warning also includes not using your firearm if you’re under the influence.
“Alcohol, drugs and guns do not mix,” he added.
The Wood County Sheriff emphasizing a bullet reaching the wrong place could turn your life upside down.
“Could you imagine going to prison for an extended period of time because somebody got hit or killed with one of your bullets,” Wasylyshyn said. “Because you wanted to celebrate New Year’s Eve… let’s put things into perspective put the gun away do not fire the gun for celebratory reasons.”
