Lorain 3rd grader criminally charged in connection to school bomb threats

LORAIN, Ohio (WOIO) – A third-grade girl in Lorain County has been criminally charged after police say she made two bomb threats on social media.

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office said she created a fake Facebook and made a post that said a bomb had been planted inside Clearview High School and Durling Middle School.

“I almost didn’t think it was real, to be honest, to have someone that young,” said Jacob Kyle, a 7th-grade coach at Durling Middle School.,

Things were back to normal at Clearview and Durling Friday but on Thursday the entire district was shut down while the FBI and the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office searched for a bomb.

Kyle was shocked when he found out the person behind the false alarm was just a little girl.

“Seeing these kids and having kids in this school nowadays is, it’s not what you want to hear especially someone that young to have access to that social media,” Kyle said. “It’s very upsetting.”

Sheriff’s deputies said a Vincent’s Elementary 3rd grader is charged with inducing panic. They say she created a fake Facebook page and tracked it back to her. Authorities said she admitted to making the threat as well as another one back in September.

We interviewed one woman who didn’t want to show her face but she’s a parent at Durling and she’s terrified.

“It’s really sad,” the mom told us. “I think that parents should have a little more involvement in what their kids are doing. 3rd grade they know the consequences, we talk about it but this is the 2nd time I heard I believe that she’s done it.”

Many in the community were also shocked to learn a child in elementary school is on Facebook.

“I blame it mostly on the social media aspect because a lot of things go through social media and word travels fast and as you can see someone can have a threat just like that and it can go downhill,” Kyle said. “I don’t think that anyone under 18 should have it to be honest, but that’s just me.”

“I definitely think parents need to be more involved in social media, third graders shouldn’t even have social media in my opinion,” the middle school mom said.

Deputies searched all the district’s schools for a bomb just to be safe but didn’t find any credible threats.

The Superintendent of Clearview Schools, Dr. Jerome Davis, said the 3rd grader was referred to the Assessment Center by a Magistrate.

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office said the parents of this little girl have not been charged.
