TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – In the past few months, 13 Action News has covered murders, robberies and a ton of stolen cars. What makes some of these cases different involves the shocking ages of the suspects.
In one instance, when officers started chasing the boys down, the kids were scared. In this case, the kids weren’t old enough to be behind the wheel and it was 1 a.m.
Officers spotted a car with no lights and when it went they went to pull it over, the car kept going and crashed into a parked car. When police pulled up to the crash, they learned it was hit by a 12-year-old joyriding his mother’s car.
“They should’ve been at home in bed,” Lyndaris Caldwell, the owner of the car that was totaled, said.
Caldwell’s car was totaled and he said it has taken a financial toll on him.
“Right now, I’m paying for this rental car out of pocket. I can barely pay for it,” Caldwell said.
Toledo Police said many of the crimes on the streets involve juveniles.
Dr. Vincent Riccardi is a licenses therapist, a parent and the executive director of the Believe Center. He said parents must know what their kids are doing.
“We’re just so busy, we let things slide and they seem to build up and so the youth are not used to consequences for their actions,” Dr. Riccardi said. “We as adults need to make sure we have conversations with them, that this is important. It’s serious and then connecting with somebody so they know that there’s accountability.”
The 12-year-olds were taken to a hospital to get checked out for minor injuries and were then released to their parents. The mother of the driver declined to comment on the crash.
