TPS teacher accused of forcing student outside

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A crying three-year-old girl at Beverly Elementary was allegedly forced to stand outside in the December cold with no coat according to the child’s mother.

The alleged incident occurred Dec. 4 at Beverly Elementary. According to our First Alert Weather Team, temperatures were in the mid-30s that day with strong winds. That is cold for anyone, especially a three-year-old.

“I feel like my daughter is just mentally drained from that,” Keshara Love, the child’s mother, said.

Three-year-old Kylie Love’s mother said her daughter was kicked out of the classroom and into the cold last week.

“I was furious,” Keshara Love said. “Would you want your kid outside in the cold in December with no coat on at school?”

Keshara Love said she found out when a Toledo Public Schools Administrator called her on Friday.

“I said, ‘What do you mean, she put her outside? And did she have a coat on?’” Keshara Love said.

According to Keshara Love, the administrator told her that they were informed the child did not have a coat on and that a teacher reported it to them.

Keshara Love said she was told it all started because her daughter was crying and that the teacher wouldn’t let her daughter back inside the school until she stopped.

“You put her outside and then for you to stand inside of a warm school and my daughter is outside with no coat on crying. You don’t think that’s going to make her cry more?” Keshara Love said.

The teacher, Kara Henck, is now being internally investigated and placed on paid administrative leave.

In a statement, TPS officials said the district reported the incident to Lucas County Children Services. The statement also said the district is committed to the safety and well being of all students and holds its staff to the highest professional standards.

“Mentally, Kylie has been… she doesn’t know who to trust,” Keshara Love said. “So now, my daughter feels like she is in trouble for something she didn’t even do.”

Keshara Love said she doesn’t want her daughter anywhere near Beverly Elementary and is now looking for a new school.
