TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – ‘Tis the season of giving and there are a lot of local initiatives to help those in need. The latest effort is being organized by a nine-year-old girl from Toledo, aimed at helping homeless people.
La’Raina Hartford’s parents said she is always trying to give back to others. Todd Hartford, La’Raina’s father, said she’s not like kids her age.
“That’s just Raina,” Todd Hartford said. “She’s always trying to ask her mom to give her money to give to somebody.”
13 Action News met with La’Raina Hartford who said she sees a lot of homeless people in downtown Toledo, and it makes her sad.
“I had one Christmas wish this year, to help people,” La’Raina Hartford said.
The young student had the idea to put together gift bags packed with necessities like toiletries and groceries to give to the homeless. The bags include items like wet wipes, hats, gloves, hand warmers and water bottles.
“If you see somebody, you should at least try to help them,” La’Raina Hartford said.
Her brother, Tavi Cortez, said she inspires him to be a better person.
“She’s very independent,” La’Raina Hartford said. “She’s very loving and she’s very caring.”
On Dec. 21, the family plans to head downtown and hand out the bags to those who need it. La’Raina Hartford and the family said they want to have as many bags as possible. If you feel inclined to donate, you can contact the family here.
“Come out and help support those in need!” La’Raina Hartford said.
