Northwood city council to keep dispatch local

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Northwood’s dispatch will stay local. It’s a decision coming from the city council, on Thursday, after discussions to move it to Wood County sparked controversy and pushback from residents.

Council had taken dispatch out of the proposed 2025 budget but added it back in in the last minute before passing the legislation at Thursday’s council meeting.

The city will spend nearly $530,000 to keep dispatch as is.

Mayor Edward Schimmel said the move to county dispatch is something city leaders have looked at for years.

“It’s something we’ve taken into consideration with the possible fire district,” he said.

That would be a regional fire district, combining local departments like Rossford, Lake Twp. and Northwood into one area. The mayor said it could help with things like short staffing, but may have different dispatching needs.

“We could be looking at a regional dispatch center, we could be looking at the sheriff’s department, we could look at dispatch continue to be here,” the Mayor said. “There’s several options that we could look at doing.”

While the decision is to keep dispatch in the city, new plans could be back on the table sometime down the road.

When adding the money for dispatch back into the budget, the council decided to pull from its reserved funding, so no cuts would have to be made in other departments to make this happen.
