TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – There will be a lot of food cooked and eaten coming up around the holidays, but don’t just pitch what stays on the plate. If you’re not a fan of leftovers, consider composting.
“A lot of food, unfortunately, is wasted. People buy groceries, it sits in their fridge, then it goes bad, and they throw it in the garbage,” Lisa Whitton, Operations Manager with Metroparks Toledo said.
Metroparks Toledo already has three public composting locations around town, but a new one has just been added inside Market Hall at Glass City Metropark.
Kroger donated $10,000 to facilitate the expansion of the program.
“We donate our food, we compost food that can’t be donated to our hunger ending partners, but when we can find partnerships like this that can take it out into the community, that’s what we’re looking for,” Mark Bruce, Corporate Affairs Manager – Kroger Columbus Division said.
“It is allowing us to take everything that Poco Piatti gives the customer. They can then take that and put it into the compost bin so it doesn’t go to the landfill,” Whitton said.
When food goes into landfills, its nutrients are lost, and methane gas is created. But it’s not just the food — everything used for eating and drinking here at Market Hall will be compostable.
“The straws are compostable, the plastic cups are compostable, which seems unusual but they make compostable plastic now,” Whitton said.
Some items like those plastic cups do require a more refined composting process.
“GoZero, our partner, is an industrial compost site. They can take those things and compost them. Usually, can’t take those in your backyard compost,” Whitton said.
Those other three compost drop-off sites are at Swan Creek Metropark, Toledo Botanical Gardem, and at the Glass City Metropark across from the Enrichment Center.
“People at home can just put their food in a bucket and once its full bring it in, and once again it doesn’t go to the landfill.”
