Toledo man charged after telling the Humane Society he shot a cat with an arrow

A warning: this story may be disturbing to some.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Toledo woman was heartbroken after her cat was shot by someone with a crossbow last month. Now that someone has been charged for the crime, the woman feels one step closer to justice.

New police body cam shows an officer investigating who hit Charlie the cat.

“They shot it in my yard, with a freaking arrow,” said Lisa Jones to the Toledo police officer, distraught.

The body cam was recorded back on Sept 17, the morning after Jones found her cat with an arrow piercing its back legs.

Toledo police went to her neighborhood on the 5200 block of Brandon Road off of Reynolds Road to make a report.

Jones said it was late at night when she heard Charlie scream. She went outside to find the cat lying in the bushes, hit by an arrow.

Charlie had to be euthanized at an animal hospital because of her injuries.

“Here, there’s the blood right there, see it?” Jones showed the officer, pointing to the bushes where it happened.

Jones estimated that Charlie fell from the fence after being struck from her neighbor’s yard.

The officer went to talk to her next-door neighbor. Police blurred the neighbor’s face. At the time 13 Action News obtained the body cam video, no one was charged with a crime.

“Neighbor next door is alleging that somebody from here shot a stray cat with an arrow,” said the officer.

The neighbor initially said he would not talk without a lawyer.

“My job is to come over here,” The officer responded. “I’m not saying that you’re in the wrong automatically or anything like that; it’s my job to come over here.”

“I know, I just know it’s not smart to say anything without one,” the neighbor replied.

“Alright, that’s it,” the officer said.

The neighbor continued talking.

“I mean, all I say is I thought it was a raccoon,” the neighbor said.

The neighbor told officers he thinks the cats are a nuisance because they mark their territory and use the bathroom in his yard. He showed the officer damage to his property.

“You can even see here, they’re spraying here, all these spray spots, tearing it up,” the neighbor said, adding that it’s hard for him to let his dog out because of the cats.

As the officer wrapped up, the neighbor asked a question.

“Do I need to be worried about anything?” the neighbor said.

The officer tells the neighbor the Humane Society may talk to him as part of a cruelty investigation, but he can explain his side.

“But you can just basically, if you want to talk to them, tell them what you told me about them coming here, damaging your property,” the officer said.

Court documents allege that on Sept. 18, one day after the police officer investigated, a man named Tristan Hance left a voicemail at the Humane Society stating he shot the cat with a crossbow.

Jones, Charlie the cat’s owner, told 13 Action News that Hance is her next-door neighbor.

On Oct. 15, Hance was charged with a misdemeanor related to animal torture.

Jones told 13 Action News she hopes that justice is carried out for Charlie.

Hance’s first court appearance is set for Oct. 22.
