TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A man previously convicted in the shooting death of a Toledo School for the Arts alumnus will receive a new trial, according to court records.
Cedrick Belmon Jr., then 18, was convicted in 2023 for shooting and killing 29-year-old Dominik Barnett.
He was sentenced to 37 years to life in prison after being convicted of multiple charges, including:
- Murder
- Felonious assault
- Discharging a firearm on or near a prohibited area
- Possessions of a weapon while under disability
- Tampering with evidence
Belmon appealed the convictions through the sixth district court of appeals and won.
He is due in court for a hearing Thursday, Oct. 9.
On July 29, 2022, Barnett was found by officers near Byrne and Gibraltar Heights suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to UTMC where he was pronounced dead.
According to court documents, Barnett was in a car with another person near the intersection of Byrne and Gibraltar Heights when a bullet came through the windshield, killing him.
The state alleges Belmon fired the shot that killed Barnett.
