FLORENCE, Kentucky (WXIX) – Businesses on Mall Road in Florence have claimed a pair of thieves were caught after stealing over $1,000 worth of Pokémon cards. FOX 19 spoke to the man who reportedly chased them out of a GameStop parking lot immediately following a second incident.
The owner of Mall Road Treasures, a vendor mall, told FOX 19 that on May 9, two men were caught on surveillance video breaking into a display cabinet and stealing three Pokémon Cards.
He posted the video on social media. Jeremy Carpenter is also a vendor at Mall Road Treasures, so he saw that surveillance video.
Carpenter said he was down the street at GameStop the next day, when he saw a pair of men he soon realized were the men from the surveillance video. He said that he got back to his car and looked the video up on his phone to confirm.
That’s when Carpenter said the men bolted out of the GameStop.
“They had stolen the whole rack of Pokémon cards and jumped into their car,” he said.
Carpenter said he told his son to buckle up, and they followed the car out of the parking lot. He said he called 911 while his son took a picture of the vehicle they were driving.
“I was just like, ‘We know it’s them now. We can’t let them get away,’” he explained.
He said police told him to stop following the car, so he went back to GameStop to tell the manager that he had been robbed.
FOX 19 spoke to the manager who said he didn’t even realize what had happened. He said he called 911, and police told him the alleged thieves had already been caught.
The manager said that their merchandise was returned later that day.
The merchandise stolen from Mall Road Treasures is allegedly worth over $1,000.
Carpenter sells comic books and action figures, so he has some expertise in collectibles. He explained that Pokémon cards have become very valuable for collectors due to the rarity of some cards and the nostalgia of a growing market.
“People my age didn’t have money to buy the stuff when they were kids,” Carpenter said. “Now that we have money, we buy the stuff we had when we were kids, and it gets expensive.”
The GameStop manager told us that their cards “fly off the shelves”.
We have reached out to Florence Police to confirm the arrests and identify the alleged thieves.
