No. 4 Ohio State Drops NCAA Super Regional Match to No. 13 LSU, 4-2



COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 seed Ohio State women’s tennis team fell to No. 13 LSU, 4-2, Friday in an NCAA Super Regional match at the Auer Tennis Center in Columbus. The Buckeyes end the year 23-4, while LSU improves to 24-7 and advances to the quarterfinals.
 
Ohio State was making the program’s 11th consecutive and 21st overall NCAA Tournament appearance and it was the fifth time the Buckeyes reached at least the third round.
 
LSU 4, OSU 2 – The Short Story
The Buckeyes opened the match with a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point. Luciana Perry and Shelly Bereznyak rolled to a 6-1 win on court three. After LSU took court one 6-4, the Buckeye duo of Audrey Spencer and Sydni Ratliff prevailed on court two in a tiebreak to clinch the doubles point.
 
LSU moved to a 2-1 lead with straight-set wins on courts three and four. On court five, Bereznyak notched a straight-set win of her own to tie the score at two. LSU took court one for a 3-2 advantage and the remaining courts were in a third set. The Tigers rallied on court six to secure the win.
 
How it Happened

  • Luciana Perry and Shelly Bereznyak dropped just the first game in their match on court three vs. Tilwith Di Girolami/Kenna Erickson for a 6-1 win.
  • On court one, the Tigers’ No. 5-ranked duo of Kayla Cross and Cadence Brace posted a 6-4 win over the Buckeyes’ Teah Chavez and Alessia Cau, breaking on the on-ad point for the victory.
  • Doubles came down to court two, where Buckeyes Audrey Spencer and Sydni Ratliff secured the point with a win in a tiebreak. In the breaker, Ohio State used a four-point run for a 6-2 advantage en route to a 7-3 victory for the match and a 1-0 Ohio State lead.
  • LSU claimed four of the first six singles matches and won in straight sets on courts three and four to take a 2-1 lead.
  • On court five, Bereznyak, a senior in her final match in Columbus, downed Kinaa Graham, 7-6 (2), 6-4, for a two-all team score. In the first set Bereznyak won on the no-ad point at 4-5 to save set point before prevailing in the tiebreaker, 7-2, after jumping out to a 3-0 lead. In the second set, she claimed the final three games for the victory.
  • A tight match on court one between No. 22 Chavez and No. 11 Brace went to the Tiger, 6-3, 7-6 (6). In the second set, Chavez broke to force the tiebreaker; in the breaker, Brace captured the final three points for the win, putting LSU up 3-2.
  • Courts two and six were in a third set when court one finished.
  • On court six, LSU’s Gaby Rivera rallied to defeat Spencer, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to seal the Tiger victory. Five of the nine games in the third set went to the deciding point, including two of the final three.
  • On court two, Perry was leading Cross, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 5-2 when the match was clinched. Perry saved match point in the second set at 4-5 and used the momentum for a 3-0 lead to start the third.
