Bowling Green assisted living facility awarded with national recognition

U.S. News and World Report awarded the organization with a spot on the 2025 ‘Best Senior Living’ list.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — A national spotlight was shone on a local assisted living facility for its high performance in activities, as well as enrichment and caregiving.

Brookdale Bowling Green was awarded a recognition of excellence by U.S. News and World Report, listing the community on the ‘Best Senior Living’ list.

Thousands of residents and family members were surveyed in different areas, such as independent living, assisted living, memory care and continuing care retirement communities across the country.

“So last year we received it [the award], but it was strictly for our assisted living community. This campus has both assisted living and memory care. So this year, we received it for both assisted living and memory care, and it was also with accolades,” said Angie Rumer, Brookdale’s sales manager.

According to Rumer, Brookdale is one of the largest senior living organizations across the U.S., with nearly 650 different locations.

She said while Bowling Green is one of several locations to win this award, it’s very significant to the community. They say they have several things that set them apart.

“It’s such an important service. The whole idea of someone having to go to a nursing home is so negative to a lot of people, so we like to be able to be an alternative to something like that so people can get the care that they need, and allow family members to go back to being family members rather than caregivers. I think that’s a huge part of this,” Rumer explained.

She said the largest focus is on meeting residents where they are and enhancing their quality of life – along with putting people first, strong community engagement and overall a home-like environment, with the purpose of not being a traditional nursing home or facility.

“Our goal is to help residents live their best life and find a sense of purpose with the time that they have with us,” Rumer said. “In assisted living, it can be quite a range of services. So, we could have folks here in assisted living who really don’t need a lot of help. It’s really that they were just kind of ready to downsize from home, and they wanted to be someplace where there’s support available if they need something. Then we have a fair amount of folks who need a fair amount of physical care.”

On the other side of the facility is memory care. The area is made up of 26 apartments. According to Rumer, the focus lies on addressing the needs of individuals while assisting in memory exercises.

“We just really, really focus on addressing the needs of folks with memory care issues and meeting them where they’re at and allowing them to live their best life,” she said.

Rumer explained while she never thought she would initially work in a place like Brookdale, she views it as a blessing.

“I feel blessed every day that I was given this opportunity. I honestly feel part of a family here. Our team, our leadership team that we work with, all the caregivers and the residents – I, I joke that I don’t have any grandmas and grandpas left, but I have a whole bunch of them here at Brookdale, and I love every one of them,” Rumer said.
