Buckeyes Score Season-High 18 Runs in Over Wright State



COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (9-24) snapped an eight-game skid, winning its midweek contest against Wright State (21-14), 18-2, on Tuesday.  
 
Game Recap

  • Trey Lipsey started an explosive inning for the Buckeye with a double down the right field line in the bottom of the first. Lee Ellis followed with a single to left field. A walk from Tyler Pettorini loaded the bases, Will Carpenter singled to right field plating Lipsey to give Ohio State the lead, which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Matthew Graveline cleared the bases with a 404-foot, three-run home run. Mason Eckelman was hit by a pitch, Sal Mineo singled to center, and Maddix Simpson walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Reggie Bussey grounded out to first, scoring Eckelman. The Buckeyes batted around, with lead-off hitter Lipsey drawing a walk to load the bases for the third time. Mineo scored off an Ellis fielder’s choice to put the Buckeyes ahead, 7-0.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Carpenter singled to right field and got into scoring position on a Wright State fielding error. Graveline reached on an error by the second baseman, advancing Carpenter to third. Eckelman grounded out to first, scoring Carpenter to extend the Buckeyes lead to eight, 8-0
  • Wright State got on the board in the top of the third inning after a two-RBI single to cut the Buckeye lead to six, 8-2
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Lipsey reached on a fielder’s choice then stole second and advanced to third on an error. Ellis doubled down the left field line scoring Lipsey. With two outs, Ellis stole third, Carpenter walked and Graveline also walked to load the bases. Eckelman scored all three from a double to left center extending the Buckeye lead to 10, 12-2.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Bussey tripled down the right field line. Lipsey stepped up to the dish next, and he sent a 369-foot home run out of the park to extend the Ohio State lead, 14-2.
  • Simpson singled to center field and Bussey singled to right field to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Ellis singled to left field, scoring Simpson. Pettorini hit the second three-run home run of the game with a 365-foot homer to right field, extending the lead to 16, 18-2.
  • Zak Sigman struck out two in the top of the seventh inning, including a looking strikeout. to seal the run-rule win for the Buckeyes.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

  • The Buckeyes’ 18 runs are the most they have scored this season.

  • Ellis had a team-high three hits.
  • Eckelman led the Buckeyes with a career-high four RBIs.
  • Lipsey, Pettorini and Graveline each had a home run. Pettorini’s home run was his team-best 10th of the season.
  • Starter Nik Copenhaver struck out three and allowed two runs on three hits in a 2.2-inning no-decision.
  • Luke Carrell (1-2) earned the win on the mound. He struck out three in 1.1 innings pitched.
