10 Rockets Earn All-MAC Honors

TOLEDO, Ohio – Ten players from the University of Toledo were selected to the 2022 All-MAC Football team in a vote by the league’s head coaches, the Mid-American Conference announced on Wednesday.

Toledo had five first-team selections, the most in the conference, and five second-team picks. Six Rockets made All-MAC for at least the second time. Senior defensive end Jamal Hines, a second-team pick, earned all-league honors for the fourth time. Senior defensive tackle Desjuan Johnson earned All-MAC for the third time, making the first-team after second-team selections in 2020 and 2021. 

Joining Desjuan Johnson on the All-MAC first-team are sophomore offensive lineman Nick Rosi, junior linebacker Dallas Gant, sophomore cornerback Quinyon Mitchell and sophomore safety Maxen Hook

Second-team All-MAC selections were Hines, sophomore quarterback Dequan Finn, sophomore wide receiver Jerjuan Newton, senior linebacker Dyontae Johnson and junior safety Nate Bauer.

Toledo, champions of the MAC West Division, will face the East Division champion Ohio Bobcats at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, Dec. 3. Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN.

Toledo’s 2022 All-MAC Honorees

First-Team All-MAC

Nick Rosi (OL, Soph., Powell, Ohio): Rosi leads an offensive line that powers the second-highest scoring offense in the MAC (33.3 points per game). Rosi made third-team All-MAC as a freshman in 2019. He sat out the entire 2021 seaosn due to injury.

Desjuan Johnson (DT, Sr., Detroit, Mich.): Johnson earns first-team All-MAC recognition after making the second-team in 2020 and 2021. His 15.5 tackles for loss ranks fourth in MAC and 17th in nation. He is second on team behind Jamal Hines with 5.5 sacks. Johnson ranks fourth in Toledo history in career TFL (46.0), tied with Hines.

Dallas Gant (LB, Jr., Toledo, Ohio): Playing in is first season at Toledo after transferring from Ohio State, Gant leads the Rockets and ranks ninth in MAC with 103 tackles. He has been the team leader in tackles four times this season, with a high of 15 vs. Northern Illinois on Oct. 8.

Quinyon Mitchell (CB, Soph., Williston, Fla.): Mitchell is the nation’s leader in passes defended with 22 (five interceptions, 17 pass breakups). His 17 breakups is the all-time Toledo record, breaking the mark of 16 set by current San Francisco 49er Samuel Womack last year. He was named second-team All-America by Pro Football Focus.

Maxen Hook (Safety, Soph., New Palestine, Ind.): Hook is third on the team with 66 tackles and has two interceptions and four pass breakups. He earned third-team All-MAC honors in 2021.

Second-Team All-MAC

Dequan Finn (QB, Soph., Detroit, Mich.): Finn ranks third in the MAC in passing efficiency (137.98) and third in total offense (249.5). He has completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 1,973 yards and 21 TDs on the season despite missing two games due to injury. He is also second on Rockets in rushing with 522 yards and has a team-best eight TDs.

Jerjuan Newton (WR, Soph., St. Petersburg, Fla.): Newton leads the Rockets with 42 receptions, and is third in MAC and tied for 14th in country with nine touchdown receptions. He is also third in the MAC with 16.9 yards per reception.

Jamal Hines (DE, Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio): Hines leads the Rockets and is tied for fifth in the MAC with 6.5 sacks. He is second on team with 9.0 tackles for loss and has 51 overall tackles. Hines ranks fourth in Toledo history in career TFL (46.0), tied with teammate Desjuan Johnson. Hines is a four-team All-MAC selection. He made third team in 2019, second team in 2020 and first team last season.

Dyontae Johnson (LB, Sr., Detroit, Mich.): Johnson is second on the team with 95 tackles and has 7.5 tackles for loss. He was the team leader in tackles three times this season. Johnson made third-team All-MAC in 2021.

Nate Bauer (Safety, Jr., Akron, Ohio): Bauer is fifth on team with 54 tackles, and has 3.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and one interception. He earned second-team All-MAC honors in 2020.
